Day 1: Arrive

Well, they say a 14 hour plane flight is not so bad once you get your mind around it, and I must admit, I've had worse 6 hour flights. Though the flight from Newark to Beijing (over 7,000 miles) was packed, it was entirely in daylight and primarily over the polar ice cap. There is a whole lot of nothing up there, let me tell you. from just north of Montreal to just north of Beijing, there i nothing but snow, rock and ice. Here we are somewhere around the north pole:

here's the view on the way into Beijing, from the North

Anyway, I made it to Beijing at about 2pm local time (1 am for those of you keeping score at home) and found my ride to the hotel.

Wasting no time, I headed out to the Hong Qiao pearl market, the weekend-only market for all kinds of stuff:

I got some goodies there, biut I'll have to post more tomorrow .

Nightime scene of Beijing from a Taxi. This is a BUSY place!
